Answers

1. I'm not from Ontario. May I register and download lessons from the site?

Yes, any educator may register for the site and download materials. Though the site is geared towards the Ontario curriculum, we welcome teachers from across the country and around the world.

2. I'm not a teacher. May I use your site?

Yes, the resources on the site may also be of interest to professors, educational assistants, policy writers, computer camp coordinators, and parents.

3. Why do I have to register for this site?

We at the Computer Science Teacher Resource Centre want to know who is using the site in order to improve it.

4. Will you give away my personal information if I register?

No, we will not divulge your personal information, (such as your phone number or email address), to any other individual or organization when you register. We do require the use of cookies for confirmation of your registration. Cookies may also be required for the generation of small, teacher-geared advertisements on the web page, (to cover operating costs for our site), but your personal information will never be sold.

5. What happens if I forget my password?

You can go the Member Centre and your password will be emailed to you automatically. It will be sent to the email address you specified at the time of registration.

6. Can I have two different logins, (one from work and home)?

Yes, although two different logins are unnecessary and we prefer you request only one. Like web-page email, your registration username and password can be accessed from any computer with Internet access.

7. Do I have to register to contribute teaching resources?

Yes, we require registration to access and contribute to the database of teaching resources.

8. How can I become an editor?

egnatoff@queensu.ca describing your interest in becoming an editor and your qualifications.

9. May I contribute anonymously?

No, you must register to submit teaching resources.

10. Who has copyright for the teaching resources?

The copyright is shared by the contributor and the Computer Science Teacher Resource Site. If a resource is found to violate any copyrights laws, it will be removed immediately and the author will be notified. Please see the terms of service.

11. What happens if I submit a resource and I don't want it to be public anymore?

Please send an email to the editor egnatoff@queensu.ca describing which resources to remove and your reasons for its removal.

12. Where do you store the resources?

The teaching resources are stored on a server belonging to the Queen's University Faculty of Education.

13. Can I get a virus from downloading a resource from your site?

As with any site, you should scan any downloaded document, (especially Microsoft Word documents), for viruses before opening it on your computer. We cannot be responsible for damages incurred when using our site. Please keep your virus protection software up-to-date and scan every downloaded document.

14. Does CSTRC endorse these teaching resources?

To ensure a high level of quality in our resources, CSTRC staff have developed a set of quality control guidelines. We apply these guidelines to all resources. In addition, we encourage users to submit the highest possible quality resources.

15. If I spot an obvious error in a document in your database, whom do I contact?

Please contact the editor, egnatoff@queensu.ca, describing the error, file name, title of the resource, author, and date.

16. I recognize a resource in your database as being published elsewhere. What do I do?

Please send an email to the editor, egnatoff@queensu.ca, describing where the resource is published and the editor will remove the document until proper copyright is obtained.

17. Can I reproduce the resources in your database for students and other teachers?

Yes, you may reproduce the resources for educational use only. The resources may not be sold for profit.

18. Can I download a resource, add my own ideas to it, and upload it as my own resource?

The editor will consider accepting revisions to a resource, depending on the extent of the changes. Both the original author's name and the revisor's name must appear on the updated resource. Please contact the editor in all cases.

19. Why can't I do an advanced Boolean search?

Boolean searching will be added in the future.

20. I don't have a zip program on my computer. How can I send multiple files and unpack zipped resources?

You can download a free zip utility from many Web sites, such as www.winzip.com .

21. I use a Macintosh computer. Can I use the resources on your site?

There will be some Mac files available for download, and PC files should be viewable on Power PCs using the appropriate software.

22. Can you convert a resource to a different file format, (e.g. Word to Claris Works), for me?

Sorry, not at this time. Try downloading the resource and opening it in Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect. Popular word-processors like Microsoft Word are able to open files of many different types.

23. Why aren't your lessons all in a standard file format?

This would require a great deal of time to convert files from one type to another. Also, it would be too difficult to choose a standard file format since teachers use a wide variety of software packages at home and school.

24. Who made this site?

Please visit the "About Us" page for site credits.

25. What happens if I don't want to be registered in this database anymore?

Please send an email to the administrator, egnatoff@queensu.ca, explaining that you wish to be removed.

26. Will you send me a lot of advertising from this site if I register?

No, but we may send occasional updates to inform you that new resources have been added to the database.

27. Why do I have to provide a phone number when registering?

The phone number is required so we can confirm your registration if necessary.

28. I have a French language class. Can you translate a lesson resource for me?

We welcome resources in both official languages, but we provide no translation services.

29. How will I know when new resources are added to your site?

New resources are being contributed to the Web site all the time, so check back often.

30. Will you eventually have resources in other subject areas?

No, this site is dedicated to Computer Studies resources.

31. I want to submit a resource applicable to several different courses. Why do I have to select a course?

Please select all courses to which your resource applies. Specifying the courses helps other teachers to find your resources when searching or browsing.

32. Can I select more than one course when submitting a lesson plan?

Yes, hold the CTRL-key down when selecting resources.

33. Why do I have to write a summary for each file I submit?

The summary is stored in the database and used to generate searchable keywords so other educators are able to find your lesson. It also summarizes your document to help other teachers decide if they wish to download it.

34. What if I zip multiple unrelated files? How do I write the summary?

In the main summary, explain each separate resource by filename.

35. How do I contribute comments on a resource in the database?

You can use the submission template and type your comments into the "text" box. No additional files are necessary. Make sure to include the file name, title, author, and date of the resource to which you are contributing comments.

36. I found a resource that is out-of-date. Why is it still on your site?

Please send a note to the editor, egnatoff@queensu.ca, and we will examine the resource for possible deletion.

37. Are your workplace profiles of real people?

Yes, these are real, although their work may have changed. For that reason, profiles are only kept for one year.

38. What if more than one person writes a resource?

You may signal group ownership of a document, e.g. the "Huntsville Curriculum Team". Please enter the additional authors in the "summary field" when contributing such a resource.
